lets take it slow here that "deal" isnt much different than the one offered on January 30th the day we went on strike.

I'm not judging the deal, I'm just stating there is a deal. I also regonize that it must be voted on first.

I predict 85% in favour. How about you Peter?
If ratified, when would you guys go back to work?

I just finished reading the deal, I think it will be much closer.
60-40 in favour.

Unfortunately for our members their wallets and wives will be talking to them. The meetings could sway the vote either way. I see us split down the middle and possibly higher with as much as 64% accepting.

I agree with Peter, the only winner in this will be the company.
Accept or reject the company will eventually win. Due to the fact that after this vote the membership will be spilt right down the middle.
If its rejected it will not be by a strong vote.

Peter you are right this is one wife who will be voting to return to work

although i do not personally agree with the offer i fully understand the pressures the bargaining committee was under. Our members all have different tolerance levels and they had to take that into consideration. Going forward they will be better financial planners i hope. I have nothing but respect for those that sat on the picket lines during some pretty rough conditions and supported our union. i can live with the outcome regardless what they decide

With world-wide conditions being what they are if the union can't win now (especially with the River possibly going out next month) then they never will. Sounds here like another union about to cave? Why do the members listen to and follow weak-kneed union reps lacking in intestinal fortitude? If pensions for those working now and to come are so insignificant then why did members go out in the first place?

6:53 for your information the River can not walk out until May 1.
They do not start bargaining until March 29th. So I don't expect that they will walk out May 1. We didn't we bargained for 4 months.
We have lost almost seven weeks wages. I personally can not afford to lose at *minimum* 46 more days pay March 16-May 1.
I understand the bargaining power of having both mines down at the same time.
Do you believe Teck will cave on the first, second day, of course not. Assuming that it only takes four weeks. At that time I will have been out for 118 days.
I for one can not afford to do that just so I might get an extra $200 a month, thirty years from now when I retire.
All that being said even tho I am not totally happy with the deal I will accept it to get back to work.

Anon @10:13
I relate to what you are saying but at the same time I am confused why your union did not wait to strike closer to when the River might. 2. why did you guys go out in the first place? Did you expect management to cave in right away when they did not with Coal Mountain? Anyway you look at it it looks like the guys you listened to did not have the smarts or the stomach to do what needed doing. Instead the workers lost time off work for nothing. Nothing was achieved except a two month holiday, without pay. A bloody shame, I think!

OMG Teck won ---Accept the deal 45%or more of our membership will be pissed. ----Reject it our membership is spilt.

Watched our Union President on Lethbridge TV Feb 4 he said with the price of coal and the floods in Australia. Teck could not afford to keep us out long.

Its now March 16.

Maybe i can answer a few questions here as i seem to have got things started.First we will not go back until an agreement has been reached the company will then recall by classifiction as they require people. The voting concludes on saturday at 4pm. The Fording River Local 7884 has infact started bargaining last week. They could settle before their contract expires on May 1. This happened the last time the two locals were set to bargain, Elkview delayed their bargaining process only to have the Fording local settle before their contract expired. It is not a matter of being weak kneed they are trying to do their best for us, they can only go as far as the membership is willing to go. I can fully understand what my coworkers are going through and am well aware of their situations. I really wish people would take the time to fully understand what is happening with our situation before posting spineless anonymous comments.

Loss of income is tough on anybody.
Hard decisions to be made.

I wish good look to all the employees of Elkview.
Teck is a big company who will have no problem surviving this dispute.
The employees are just little guys who this is going to be very tough on.
Again Good Luck

Alan

Thank you for removing those posts Dean they were far from appropriate given the circumstances myself and co-workers are in.

I agree 100% some of these comments were no longer in any way related to the issue at hand.
We do not need personal attackes on either Mr Prince, Peter Rosner or the union leadership.
To the issue of stifling "Fair Comment" would you Dean, or any of the other blog operators swear that you have never refused to post a comment?

11:13 Funny you said that I attempt to put stuff on both Ward and Princes Blog during the election and they both shut down "fair comment"

For the record. Recently Dean posted this column On the Elkview mine strike. I replied to it and as it progressed others saw fit to use it as an opportunity to make derogatory comments that were not relevant to the topic. Some of the anonymous comments were questioning the unions leardeship while others went beyond that. It appears Dean had enough removed several comments including mine and closed off all debate. Probably a wise thing to do and it is his right as the author of this blogsite. Just for the record dean and myself are not "buddies". I first met Dean while we both worked on reclemation in the late 1970's. Since that time we have engaged in a lot of political discussion when we run into each other. We agree and disagree on various issues and at one time during his first time were polar opposites on a very important issue that impacts this community still today. All this being said i can respect the job he done for us while a member of council. He had the courage to take a stand on issues that previous councillers would not touch. It was easier for them to just throw money at the problem and hope it goes away.He made his decision and let the chips fall where thet may. I truly believe that during this term a lot of the locl taxpayers are going to ask themselves why they listened to one local paper and the rhetoric leading up to the last local election. I know this is not connected to the original post but i feel the readers should know exactly where i stand for more go to the miners journey by peter rosner and thanks once again.

derogatory comments?? Please allow me to also go a little off topic Peter. Do you not think there was some criminal activity down here involving a certain real estate development? 50 million (at least) raised and do you see anything built?
Someone called it as he/she saw it (and is as obvious as the nose on your face) and you then call it "derogatory comments". You seemed smarter than that.

I think we are well off topic here and perhaps Dean will run another column on the Bridgecreek issue. What i believe has been well documented in the local papers leading up to the municipal election in 2007. At that time i submitted an article on developments. Dean ran a previous column here on February 10/2011 titled "interesting story regarding freebies for politicians" and posted that article from 2007. I have also replied on this toopic several ties on Deans blog under the headings "forum of interest" and "Economic task force" Keep in mind a few things when i wrote the original article i did not see what was going to happen and was not aware the mayor was involved to the extent he was. I cannot say their was illegal activity but certainly a huge conflict of interest i guess we will find out. I reply to deans blog using my name or my blog name the miners journey hopefully this clarifies things.
